Plan for Shooting - Update

Unfortunately we are unable to film today due to our main singer suddenly becoming ill, therefore we will fall slightly short when it comes to the rough cut deadline.

Therefore we will hopefully be able to film over this weekend and therefore be able to conclude our filming entirely and focus on editing.

We will try to make up for this with working extra hard in the upcoming weeks.

Carol Vernalis and our Music Video (samet)

Narrative-  Carol Vernalis describes her theory particularly with the narrative aspect, and she believes that the video is a response to the lyrics and narrative. Therefore, whatever happens on screen; visually, reflects on the choice of the lyrics from the singer. Our music video tends to reflect the lyrics of the singer in some manner as well, for example, the lyrics describes how the singer(actor) had met a girl and fallen in love with her and everything goes well with them but the girls cheats on him, in our video we followed the narrative and our actor Devon had a girlfriend but then he finds out that she cheats on him. One particular part which i would like to look closely is the lyrics saying, "until you disappeared with him, to have sex of course" over here we could understand that of course the girl had an affair with another person, and in our video we made a scene/shot where Devon finds out in a party that his girlfriend is cheating on him with another person as well. we have not quite finished our filming so i cannot provide images yet.

Editing- Vernalis also claims that a convention of music editing is that the video may break conventions of continuity editing. For example, Vernalis says that in order for this to work the audience may see : Jump Cuts, Breaking the 4th wall and the 30 degree rule, slow motion and changes in pace. In our video we meet these factors brought up by Carol, except the slow motion effect as we chose not to apply it on our editing. firstly, we have many jump cut shots in our video, as the music has a fast pace and in order for the audience to stay engaged with the video; visually there has to be a rapid pace. Devon, our main actor in the video stays in contact with the camera throughout the video so as the theory points out we do break the 4th wall and our actor does keep eye contact with the camera this happens a lot at all the base tracks. Also, we do have changes in pace because, its a must as the audience has to find the video interesting rather than watching a steady pace and getting them bored. for example, the change in pace occurs when the beat drops in the music.

Camera movements and Framing-  Carol Vernalis states that establishing shots are definitely one of the key camera  features of a music video and are used frequently in a music video as well as close up shots. we have many types of shots in our video for example, close ups, long shots mid shot, low angle, panning and etc. for example, in the beginning of the video we have a close up shot of Devon's face to start the video and where he sings the lyrics. we have a low angle, where Devon walks down the stairs and the camera is looking up to him, also when he leaves his house door the camera follows him from the side whilst walking to practice the panning shot.

Diegesis- Plot - Diegesis is the world of music videos and Vernalis says how it would be explained and revealed slowly as the video progresses. In our video we meet this claim and as the narrative explains how the person finds out their girlfriend cheated on them by having an affair. In our video we have we stat with Devon singing to the music and getting ready, travelling to the party and they drink get drunk and he finds his girlfriend with someone else.

TODAYS LESSON 17th NOV

In todays lesson we plan to further the progress in the editing. What we need to do is:

  • Get the majority of the second verse done.
  • Put the new shots from this weekend in to the pile of other clips we have.
  • Sort out the rendering issue with our clips
It also helps that we are in the editing suite as we can make full use of the equipment and facilities.

THE PITCH

Complication with editing

Since we have filmed our music video on jakubs own camera, it has been difficult editing on a computer that has a software that is programmed to allow the college cameras be able to edit swiftly.
We have been having to render every bit of editing that we did and it has proven to be taking up too much time.
Luckily, we have had some help from the technichians and we have changed the format around. So hopefully, we wont be having a problem with rendering every two minutes!

Todays Lesson 12th Nov.

We are using the three hour lesson to edit our music video; adding in what the things we filmed over the past few days.
There are some improvements we need to make and also need to add in more scenes; but all that will happen on another day. For today, editing the things we have.

Absence (samet)

Im sorry i couldnt attend to todays lesson because i was ill but if my group could leave me some notes on our blog of any tasks i have to do or blogs i need to post i could do it

FEEDBACK FROM DAN

After Dan had watched what we have put together, he highlighted ways in which to improve it. One thing that he highlighted was that the video was throughly based around one character and pretty much every shot had Dirty Devon in it. He said that we should add variety to the contents of our shots whether it be another character or even another item or location.

For inspiration as to how we could improve it, he showed us a music video by John Grant called "GMF".

As this music video is based around one character, it shows how to effectively incorporate other characters, locations and items into our music video to add variety and make it more engaging for the audience.

SATURDAY 15TH NOV - FINISHING FILMING?

On Saturday we hope to finish our filming by getting the last shots to end the music video. In these shots we plan to get someone to play Dirty Devon's girlfriend who cheats on him with someone else.

What we need to do for Saturday:

  • Sort out the issue of who will play the girlfriend
  • Sort out who will play the guy she cheats with
  • The location for the filming

Filming on Saturday 8th Nov.

Saturday was a close call! We done all the filming we needed to do just before it started pouring down with rain.
We arrived at Jakub's friends, Joe's house to shoot the party scene.
After we arrived, Joe took us down to the basement to set up the camera equipment.

I was put in charge of taking photo's during the course of that day; so i did exactly that. The moment i got the camera, i started taking photos of devon and jakub getting ready for the music video.

Camera Set.
Singer Ready.
Off We Went.

We continuously shot the party scene until we got it perfect.
After that, we went outside and filmed 'dirty devon' singing on the street at the bus top.

We went back to the house and waited for it to get a little dark outside so it would be right for the particular scene we wanted to film. The scene is when 'dirty devon' approaches the party house and knocks on the door.
Filming and taking photo's of that part was very funny indeed.

We needed an extra person to act out opening the door to 'dirty devon' and joe was up for it.  Filming it was a mission but we did it.
We wanted the point of view to be from joe and so we had to put the camera in front of him in order to show what he saw.
The position Jakub, the camera man, had to get into was hilarious!

We also shot a part where 'dirty devon' is in the living room, singing. A little furry friend called Bonnie decided to jump into the shot when we were filming which was quite funny.

We then moved down to the garden where we did another base track. It was dark and 'dirty devon' was cold but it had to be done.

Finally we shot one of the last base track which was on the roof. The roof was as flat as it can be and it was perfectly safe for us to film. We just made sure that we didn't go anywhere near the edge.
The night arrived, as we continued to film on the roof. But then, Rain! It poured down with rain like never before; luckily we were content with the amount we did on the roof.
It was so funny watching devon and jakub getting through the high window to get on to the roof and coming back after filming. Some great pictures were captured!

The Journey home was wet and soggy; not pleasant at all.

No Pictures Uploaded Yet. Will Do Soon.

Todays Editing and plan

We have spent the morning edit the rough cut to our music video. Jakub has edited most of the clips. there are still some shaky bits such as the lyrics not being sync with Devon our singer, but no worries, we will perfect it all very soon.

We have planned to finish our filming on Saturday (8th Nov.). We will meet at 2 o'clock and start filming as soon as we have arrive at Jakub's friends house.
The party scene for the music video is what we need to film.
After that, on a monday or a tuesday (10/11th Nov.), we will go to Devons house to reshoot some bits of the scene that has gone wrong.
