Planning - Analysis of original music video

The song of our choice is 'Ed Sheeran - Don't'.

Key features of this video -

  • It follows an obscure narrative of a dancer who wakes up half naked on a dirty mattress in the middle of a poor neighborhood and quite literally "dances" his way out of there, on the way picking up more elegant items of clothing and going to increasingly sophisticated locations.
  • The main character in the video is not the singer of the song, instead it is a dancer (the singer does however make a cameo within the video as he drives by in a fancy car noticing the dancer). the video does not include any lip-syncing.
  • The music in the actual video comes across as half diegetic as it fades out as the dancer gives a child a pair of headphones, and starts playing again as he enters another house. Also the music becomes very muffled as the dancer dives in a swimming pool, therefore meaning that the dancers actions directly affect the audibility of the music, making the viewer more engaged in whats going on in the video.
  • The video also follows the music video rules found by Carol Vernallis as the cuts often match the beats and rhythm, of the song as well as well as include a large number of jump cuts.
  • Another feature of this video is that it does not seem to use base tracks, as no location is repeated in different parts of the music video (except for the short flashback at the end), instead the video is very mobile and progressive.

Ways in which our music video will differ from the original -

  • The primary difference between the original video and the one we will be making is that our video will feature the singer singing the song in nearly every shot.
  • Another difference is we will be telling a less obscure and more relate-able narrative through our music video.
  • Another difference is our music video will feature a number of base tracks while the original does not seem to include any.
  • A visual difference which will be clearly visible is our video will be primarily set at night and in dark locations while the original video is brightly lit and set exclusively during the day.
  • A last difference we will make is have very few filming locations compared to the original video which includes a multitude of roads, houses, fences and even a mansion.
