Research - Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin believes that music videos inherit the stereotypes and trends of their artists genre. for example rock videos tend to include a stage performance as well as close ups of the band's artists playing their instruments, pop music videos often include the singer breaking the fourth wall in order to engage the viewer as well as repeats images and so on.
Goodwin states that there are three kinds of music videos:
- illustration - when the visuals relate directly to the current lyrics
- amplification - when videos amplify the meaning of the song adding layers to it but does not have to directly reflect the meaning
- disjuncture - when the video has little or no connection to the meaning of the song
